Emotional Alchemy

Emotional alchemy is the process of transforming our relationship with our emotions. Especially those that are challenging or difficult to manage.

When our emotions are uncomfortable, we tend to see them as problematic or something that we should suppress. The issue with muting our feelings is that emotions are also our source of vitality, aliveness, and connection. We cannot cherry pick which emotions to dampen, we end up dampening ourselves as a whole.

If we can accept & even potentially embrace the full range of our emotional experiences, without numbing out or acting out, we can learn to use them as a gateway to meaning, purpose, acceptance, belonging, intimacy, freedom, growth and connection.

Reflections

  • Think of a problem you have in your life right now.

  • Write down all of the context, circumstances, details, history & facts.

  • Now add how you feel about the problem.

  • How have you labelled it?

  • What narrative does it confirm?

  • What does having this problem make you right about?

  • How has your problem affected your confidence?

  • Has your problem left you feeling disempowered?

  • Is your problem attached to time?

  • Is there a deadline?

  • Has it been going on for ages & that has created more pressure?

  • If you can dismantle the attachment to time, can you diffuse some of your suffering?

  • If your perceived problem has dashed your confidence, have you stopped acting?

  • Are you trying to avoid disappointment / risk / failure / rejection / loss / frustration?

  • Do you feel like you have no power in relation to your problem?

  • Do you feel like you are a victim?

  • Do you feel like you can’t change anything?

  • Is there some new responsibility you need to own here?

  • How can you set yourself up with better circumstances in the future?

  • What are the actual facts of your problem?

  • When you remove all the feelings, meanings, assumptions & presumptions, what is left?

  • Were you even aware of your assumptions?

  • Is this problem a fact or a belief?

  • What is a better belief I could get behind?

  • Can I become grateful for my problems?

  • Who do I want to be in the face of my problems?
