The Art of Receiving

Do you feel bad when someone else pays for the coffee? Do you dismiss compliments? When someone gifts you a present, are you immediately anxious about how & when you can repay them?

We have been taught that it is better to give than to receive. It makes us uncomfortable, indebted & embarrassed.

There are energetics at play in the exchange of giving & receiving. If you are not in the right energy, it won’t feel good either way.

If you want more of anything in life, be that results, money, pleasure, success or love, you better get really good at receiving. Because without that flow of energy, you are cutting yourself from joy & abundance in life.

In this conversation, we explore how we can become extraordinary receivers!

Reflections

  • Write down some memories of receiving things in 2023:

Money, gifts, quality time, treats, pleasure, compliments, acts of service, clients, opportunities?

  • How did you feel when you received them? Did you feel like you were underserving? Did you feel like you owed someone something in return? Did you feel any guilt or shame? Did you feel any disappointment or lack? How much did you allow yourself to have fun when you received?

  • Think of one thing you really want to receive this month. Contemplate how long you are able to hold the frequency of this desire. Practice 1 day. Try building up to a week. Can you hold it for the rest of the month?

  • What are your trigger response tactics?

Do you race to pay first? Do you immediately rush to rebalance the imaginary score? Do you rebuff the compliment?

  • Are you willing to take responsibility for your push back behaviours?

  • Notice how the people in your life receive. Without judgement, what can you learn about cultural conditioning, social roles & the dynamics at play around you.

  • Think back to times when you have given something to someone & how they received it made you feel really good. What can you learn from that?

  • Next time you feel blocked receiving, question it. Has this blocking served you in the past? Can you release this self-protection mechanism in order to open yourself up to more joy?

  • What kind of receiver do you want to be?
